Bucky Lounge Chairs by Marc Newson

Bucky Lounge Chairs - Designed for Fondation Centre in 1995, the Bucky Lounge Chairs are made up of individual elements connected together in the form of a three-quarter sphere. Only 50 models of the chairs were produced and interestingly, its name was inspired by the newly discovered molecule, the Buckminsterfullerene's geodesic structures. Love the connection revolving around design, art and science. Click here to get one of the lounge chairs.

Lockheed Lounge by Marc Newson

Lockheed Lounge - The aluminium Lockheed Lounge by Marc Newson used in Madonna's video "Rain"was sold for £1.1 million today in London at Phillips de Pury & Co. It is the most expensive furniture or design art ever sold. Made in 1985 when Marc Newson was still 23 and made from a fibreglass core and riveted sheet aluminum, the Lockheed Lounge was entirely hand-crafted by Marc Newson. The form was about aerodynamic fluidity and seamlessness. A very good example of contemporary design with the development in space technology and streamlined forms. Glad to see such design pushing the boundaries even during the economy downturn. Check out the video below with the Lockheed Lounge inside and a little trivia info: the video went on to receive the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards that year for Best Art Direction. I guess it is an extremely good marketing tool to use music video to showcase your works.

Marc Newson: Urban Spaceman

Marc Newson - He's truly one of my inspirations after Starck. An aussie industrial designer who knows no boundaries and has created almost anything from the iconic Lockheed Lounge chair to coat hangers. His fascination with space odyssey can be seen in many of his work and its not surprise to see him working on the Space Plane. The truly extraordinary part of his creations are the extreme relevance to the current generation and that is probably why his designs are so sought after. Did a presentation about him and Ron Arad during Semester One and never regretted it. Recently he talked to Alan Yentob about his inspirations, thought processes and designs on BBC One. Check out the videos below and click here to see some of his magic.

Horizon Watch by Marc Newson

Horizon Watch - Did a project on this designer before and all I can say is his products aren't cheap at all. Manufactured by Ikepod, this unique watch is signed and designed by Marc Newson and crafted from platinum and features a single-shell case and sapphire front. Looks like a speaker front and it seems like the watch is speaking to you. Pretty cool but do not be put off by the price tag haha. Click here to get one.
