Zee Avi's Self Titled Debut Album

Zee Avi - A gem of a voice from across the causeway. Zee Avi also known as KokoKaina is a Malaysian singer-songwriter who croons with such relaxation that I enjoy reading with her in my iTunes. Unsurprisingly, she's signed to Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. Age 23, she's pretty amazing. Click here for more info.

Departures/ Okuribito OST

Departures/ Okuribito - If you've watched the movie, you would totally love the soundtrack because it definitely has a great impact on the movie's success. Mamoru Fujisawa or more professionally known as Joe Hisaishi is the composer of the soundtrack who is also widely known for his masterpiece in Spirited Away. If death has never been so beautiful to your eyes, it has never been so beautiful to your ears too. Awesome soundtrack.

Friendly Fires

Friendly Fires - Debut album for this English band from St Albans, Hertfordshire. Pop, disco, retro or shoegazing (a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged from the UK in the late 1980s because the musicians in these bands maintained a motionless persona during live performances; they stood on stage and stared at their effects pedals or the floor, hence, the idea that they were gazing at their shoes and the sound is typified by significant use of guitar effects, and indistinguishable vocal melodies that blended into the creative noise of the guitars), this album by Friendly Fires is definitely audio friendly and a keeper. Not something mainstream but you can expect to hear them from advertisements selling uber cool products. What an album for a debut, looking forward to more stuff from them. Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam

Strawberry Jam - Perhaps you might like strawberry jam after listening to this album by Animal Collective, a Baltimore based band which I've been listening to. A different approach to their earlier works, this album is "something that's really synthetic and sharp and futuristic looking," but also "tangy and sweet, almost in a kind of aggressive way in terms of the way it tastes", directly influencing the album art. Psychedelic folk or noise rock, Strawberry Jam is extremely experimental and avant garde in some way which makes them so appealing. Check out their MySpace corner here.

Marsmobil's Minx

Marsmobil - This is something really unique and interesting for my ears and it kind of rekindled my love for lounge music. Backed by studio wizard Roberto Di Gioia and Martine Rojine's sultry vocals, Minx is truly an amazing album filled with space psychedelia. Electronic. Intergalactic. Seductive. Its time to sit back with some alcohol and chill with this lounge hit. Click here to check out their MySpace corner.

Kanye West's 808s & Hearbreak

808s & Heartbreak - Finally the album I have been yearning to listen to this year. In the midst of the financial meltdown and post depression felt with all the terrorist attack, meshed together with your own personal issues in work, school or family, I think this album is rather therapeutic in helping one through such difficult moments. The concept of 808s & Heartbreak came from the loss, loneliness and loaning houses for companionship and a sense of normalcy. Not your typical hip hop album because West did more melodies than rapping with the help of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, something which he felt that can be used to evoke emotion. Another highlight in the album is the heavy reliance on the voice audio processor technology of Auto-Tune. Its true that if he didn't use Auto-Tune, he might not be able to push this album to another level but somehow the effect of the Auto-Tune is a true representation of the effects of desperation and heartbreak. I wouldn't say this album is a redefinition of hip hop but definitely a different sort of hip hop album with a heavy theme being injected into it and its a permanent keeper in my play list.

Arco's Restraint

Restraint - I know I know, its the end of the semester and its time to turn up the volume but I think Arco did such an excellent job with their first album "Coming to Term" that I had to check this out too. Filled with innocence, hope and despair, "Restraint" is an another awesome follow up to their first. Definitely worth tuning in and one of the best example that quiet is the new loud.

Arco's Coming to Terms

Coming to Terms - If you are thinking of what songs are good for mugging especially during those late nights when you just want the flow and peace, do check out Arco which is a British band noted for their unusually slow, quiet and poetic music (you must be able to take Indie music). Not to the extent of making you want to doze off but their music is kind of relaxing which makes you feel as though you are in a floatation tank. Q Magazine, a UK national monthly music magazine, described Coming to Terms as "the aural equivalent of a human being pausing for thought as the world speeds on around". Very true when you tune into them in your MP3 at times and you would feel like you are coming to a standstill while the world speeds along. Many of their songs are featured in the soundtracks of drama series all over the world like One Tree Hill, Californicaton and Coffee Prince. Something different and laid back. Definitely not mainstream.

Blade of the Immortal OST

Blade of the Immortal - Have been watching this on going anime amid all the mugging and the violence in it kind of relates well to stabbing my brain with information. Love the soundtrack which is composed by Kō Ōtani (大谷幸) who did an excellent job of balancing the haunting and intense pieces together to make the entire soundtrack extremely suitable for the anime. Many of the tracks employ vocals that sound like someone wailing in the dead of the night, like a widow mourning for her husband kind of feel but they bring out another dimension when used during fight scenes in the anime, injecting more violence and fury into the mix. Somehow, there's an additional sophistication in the anime with the soundtrack, something which would be severely lacking if you just read the manga. One heck of fusion music I must say and do check it out for a different audio experience.

Monkey: Journey to the West Soundtrack

Monkey - I love Gorillaz and when I heard that Damon Albarn is involved in some stage musical, I had to check it out. Monkey: Journey to the West is a stage adaptation of the Chinese novel you know where there's Monkey God and Tripitaka whom everyone wants to eat. The musical was created by Chinese director 陈士铮, together with Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett while the original idea came from Jean-Luc-Choplin, head of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris. Would love to check out the musical someday but the soundtrack is rather dope with a rich mix of fusion music injected into it. You get Chinese vocals with European music backdrop courtesy of Damon Albarn and Co. Very interesting stuff and the artwork is also very Gorillazque. Check it out!

Midicronica's #501

#501 - Been listening to this album recently and their songs have been topping my playlist. Famous for their hit song "San Francisco" of Samurai Champloo anime, this Jap Hip Hop group churns out "Good smell music" which is a fusion type of genre and shares visual resemblance to Gorillaz. Their story is made up life forms No716, No894, No181 and No563 which are created by experiment of Steroid-Lostnumbers Laboratory in a certain world. They were sent to collect information of the real world and they somehow managed to communicate with human by music in a deserted building. Every night, weird music was heard from the building where no one is sure to live and people started to call that building Freak's Mansion. Well sounds a little lame but what matters is the music that I've been listening to and they have been great so far with mixtape type of pattern but sounds better than those mixtapes available for download. If you're into N.E.R.D or M-Flo, they are another gem to be discovered. Click here for their official site and here for their MySpace corner.

Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III

Tha Carter III - This review is inevitable. With an opening week sales of more than a million copies in the United States, it is thus far the largest first week sales for any album in 2008 and the first to crack the million mark in one week since 50 Cent's The Massacre in 2005. It took 3 years for a dreadlocks singer who sniffs cocaine to perfect that synthesiser voice to break that barrier so is Lil Wayne really any good at all? Well Tha Carter III is definitely a keeper if you ask me because its really a complete album with adequate hits and beats in overall to make you want to listen to it over and over again as compared to Kanye West's Graduation and 50 Cent's Curtis. Never mind the lewd lyrics and cursing but the beats inside every tracks are really sic and that voice of his is really something which would make every clubber who loves Phuture proud haha. Hats off to some of the creativity in his tracks like "A Milli", "Dr. Carter", "Comfortable", "La La" and "I'm Me" which reminded me of some of Jay-Z's earliest works. He can really rap and "Lollipop" together with its remix version are probably my favourite of the lot. If you dig hip hop, you can't miss this album (Legend in the making). Hope he would consider doing a collaboration with Pharrell Williams because that would be one hell of a collaboration.

N.E.R.D's Seeing Sounds

Seeing Sounds - Hohoho finally this is out. One of my most anticipated albums for this year haha. If you've heard their previous album Fly or Die, you should know why. N.E.R.D's music is a mixture of almost anything you can find, put together and well shaken to perfection. Not really club music but you can feel bits and pieces of it with some European influence. Their music is almost like a genre itself and when you listen to it, you would feel like you're taking LSD haha. Seeing Sounds is inspired by the neurological phenomenon synesthesia which combines two sense that may cause a person to experience colourful hearing or auditory smell. Certain songs in this album has a live feel in it which is really fresh. I'm really digging the song "Everyone Nose" and the remix version as well. If you like music, you ought to love this album.

Nujabes' Modal Soul

Modal Soul - Just got my hands on this piece of art, well at least its a piece of art to my ears. First heard about Nujabes when I watched Samurai Champloo and I was rather captivated by his music. So I decided to give this album a try and it turned out really well. A combination of hip hop, soul and slow cool jazz is what you can get from this album and it helps to put your mind at ease something like lush music. I like the fact that first half of the album is filled with slow beats and vocals, mostly raps while the second is more instrumental and lush with no vocals. Very soothing. For your info, Nujabes is an anagram of Jun Seba spelled backwards and combined. He is a Japanese hip hop music producer and DJ as well as a composer and arranger. Besides making music, he is also an owner of T Records and Guinness Records and runs Hydeout Productions. The enigmatic charm in his music is what draw many to his music and if you want to experience this album go check it out. More info on Nujabes here.

Colbie Caillat's Coco

Coco - This review is long overdue. Have been listening to Colbie Caillat a lot recently, just like OneRepublic, she's famous after releasing her hit single "Bubbly" through MySpace which led her to become the number one unsigned singer in her genre for four months. Her songs have a feel-good effect after listening to them, be it when you are feeling down in the dumbs or when you need a wake up call, this is something you can rely on. If you like Jack Johnson, you will definitely dig her music because they are rather similar. I hope they could do a duet one day haha. Another indulgence is to listen to her music while you're on the beach or sun-tanning, its quite therapeutic.

Juno OST

Juno - Well if you watched the movie and love it, you will definitely love the soundtrack. Filled with plenty of songs that primarily reflects a childlike sense of wonder. Kimya Dawson is heavily featured in this soundtrack and her voice is excellent. She appears solo, with her old group, The Moldy Peaches and her side project Antsy Pants. Her voice somehow reminds me of Colbie Cailat. Really love this soundtrack, haven't been so drawn by a soundtrack for a while. Great for the ears.

Super Sunshine

OneRepublic's Dreaming Out Loud

Dreaming Out Loud - Debut album of OneRepublic, if you do not know them you ought to know their hit single "Apologise".. ya know, that one which has the chorus of "its too late to apologise.." Yup a lot of peeps out there might think that they are a one hit wonder but their album proves to be a complete hit. Very beautiful vocals and a wide range of instruments used for their background music. Bet you didn't know that OneRepublic has been the number one band on MySpace for over a year and has been in MySpace Music's Top Artists since early 2006 with over 21 million total song plays and still counting. This is one band to look out for in the future and this album is absolutely amazing.
